📝 Офира – город, просуществовавший всего четырнадцать лет на месте, где я, на видео, у самой кромки волн, исполняю ведущую тему этой композиции. Сегодня, спустя чуть более сорока лет, от него не осталось ни следа – словно никогда и не было, как и самой мечты о древней легендарной стране Офир, недосягаемой и потому особенно притягательной.
В немецком языке есть слово Sehnsucht – почти непереводимое состояние тоски по воображаемому или недоступному, по тому, что существует скорее во внутренних переживаниях, чем в реальности. Оно есть в поэзии Фридриха Шиллера, а Артур Шопенгауэр видел в нём форму стремления, в котором важна не цель, а само напряжение между желанием и невозможностью его осуществления – эту же символику и я заложил в основу звучания данной композиции.
Эта музыка – подарок в канун дня рождения моему дорогому сыну, Климу Удотову – человеку, который посвятил четверть жизни безопасности своей страны – той самой, к которой когда-то принадлежал и этот исчезнувший город. Человеку, благодаря которому моя внучка не только носит имя моей матери, Эстер, но и будущее которой полностью вверено в его руки, а значит, требует сил и душевного равновесия на долгие годы вперёд. Согласитесь, защитить и воспитать одну душу требует не меньшего труда, чем в пустыне построить страну, а компромиссы иногда приходится совершать настолько болезненные, что это равносильно покинутому городу?
Как осуществлялась запись?
📝 Начало шестого утра, берег залива. Основная секвенция, которая стержнем проходит через всю композицию записана заранее на синтезаторе The Legend Hans Zimmer и транслируется с берега в головные телефоны, в которых параллельно встроены и микрофоны – таким образом я слышу и своё соло на раритетной мелодике Hohner, и оркестровую часть.
К нагрудному карману рубашки (с левой стороны, на видео не видно) прикреплен маленький рекордер Sony, чтобы прописать сольную партию мелодики дифференцировано от волн.
В это же время на берегу стоит студийный рекордер Zoom H4e для близкой записи волн.
Впоследствии, сольный трек мелодики был был превращён в MIDI-дорожку и заменён на микс флейт фрулато с гобоями, кларнетами и корнетами. Также эта партия (с вариациями) была продублирована арфой с пэдом.
Позже были записаны басовая линия на Roli Piano & Airwave и партия перкуссии. Если в предыдущей композиции, записанной на этом же месте полгода назад («Море на краю Синая»), записанные волны являются частью концепции и полностью вошли в релиз, то здесь они были мной исполнены заново сэмплами Korg Grandstage X.

📝 Ophira was a town that existed for only fourteen years, on the very spot where, in this video, I perform the main theme of this composition at the edge of the waves. Today, a little more than forty years later, not a single trace of it remains – as if it had never existed at all, much like the dream itself of the ancient legendary land of Ophir: unreachable, and therefore all the more alluring.
In the German language, there is a word – Sehnsucht – a state that is almost impossible to translate precisely: a longing for something imagined or unattainable, for something that exists more within inner experience than in reality itself. The word appears in the poetry of Friedrich Schiller, while Arthur Schopenhauer saw in it a form of yearning in which the destination itself matters less than the tension between desire and the impossibility of fulfilling it. This same symbolism became the foundation of the sound and emotional language of this composition.
This music is a gift on the eve of the birthday of my dear son, Klim Udotov – a man who devoted a quarter of his life to the security of his country, the very country to which this vanished town once belonged. A man thanks to whom my granddaughter not only carries the name of my mother, Esther, but whose future is now entirely entrusted to his hands — and therefore requires strength and inner balance for many years to come. After all, would you not agree that protecting and raising even a single soul may demand no less effort than building a country in the desert, and that some compromises can become so painful that they feel equal to abandoning an entire city?
How was this recording made?
📝 Just before six in the morning, on the shore of the bay. The main sequence — the musical thread running through the entire composition — had been recorded in advance on the The Legend HZ and was played back from the shore into headphones equipped with built-in microphones. In this way, I could hear both my solo performance on a vintage Hohner melodica and the orchestral part at the same time.
A small Sony recorder was attached to the chest pocket of my shirt (on the left side, not visible in the video) in order to record the melodica solo separately from the sound of the waves.
At the same time, a studio recorder – the Zoom H4e – was placed on the shore for a close recording of the waves.
Later, the melodica solo track was converted into a MIDI track and replaced with a blend of flutter-tongued flutes, oboes, clarinets, and cornets. This part was also doubled, with variations, by a harp layered together with a pad texture.
Afterwards, the bass line was recorded using ROLI Piano and ROLI Airwave, along with the percussion parts. If, in the previous composition recorded at the same location half a year earlier – “The Sea Where Sinai Ends”(https://youtu.be/RQIhXhzFiDM) – the recorded waves themselves were part of the concept and fully included in the release, here they were re-performed by me using samples from the Korg Grandstage X.
NB. A performance version of the release has been uploaded for YouTube broadcast. It differs from the audio-only version available on streaming platforms.
